Beauty Services Step by Step

May 14, 2012

As San Francisco’s Ultimate Beauty Destination, Beauty Company loves it when our clients spend an entire day pampering with us! For clients coming in for all day appointments (hair, nails, waxing, tanning and shopping of course!) we often get questions on the best sequence to do services. Read on for Beauty Company’s perfect beautifying day:

Wax first. You always want to want to wax before any spray tanning, otherwise the tan will come right off with your hair as you’re waxed! However, with bed tanning, we recommend waiting 24 hours between appointments. The UV lights are harsh on sensitized skin, so let your skin chill before getting into a bed.

Nails next. You don’t want to be hopping on a waxing table with wet nails. If you’re spray tanning also, make sure to let your nails dry completely. Let our front desk know, and we’ll inform the technician not to apply lotion after your feet soak (that can act as a barrier to the spray tan solution). You will still get a scrub and massage, don’t worry!

Hair following. Make your way over to Salon. If you’re having a shampoo (either with a haircut or a blowout) you don’t want to risk getting your neck wet after a spray tan. Relax and let your nails continue to dry as our talented stylists perfect your look. Our spray tan artists will gently cover your hair and ensure a single hair doesn’t fall out of place!

Spray Tan finish: Once you’re perfectly smoothed, plucked, painted, polished and coiffed, it’s time to hop upstairs to the Bronze Alley! Enjoy a perfect spray tan with our trained artists. Make sure to wear dark, loose-fitting clothing so you’re comfortable after you’re done.

Do The Wave

May 09, 2012

Crave those sexy, kinky waves you see strolling down the runway? Sleeping in braids will partly help you get there, but we have the solution for ladies on the go. Hot Tools Deep Waver is one of our favorite unique stylers.

Section your hair (completely dried) into approximately five-inch sections around your head. Clamp the waver near your scalp. Hold for a few seconds, release, then clamp the remainder of the section (immediately below your recently-waved hair). Depending on the length of your hair, you may have to clamp each section 2-4 times to get the entire length of your hair.

Make sure to finish with a perfect beach spray to complete the sexy, tousled look. Bring on the summer fashion!

Straight! Or Curly….?

May 05, 2012

We love the effortless way Taylor Swift bounces from Curly Q locks to Straight ‘n Sleek shine. How DOES she do it?? We can’t guarantee this is her method, but we do know what works for us. Read on to discover why Paul Mitchell and Hai are two of the best-selling items at Beauty Company.

Paul Mitchell Clipless Wand

This wand’s unique tear-drop shape creates a much more natural, bouncy curl than a traditional iron. While using a clipless can take some getting used to (word of caution – do not burn your finger!) you will discover it’s ease of use in no time. While older wands (aka, curling irons without clips) usually had a more conical shape (narrow at the tip, wide at the base) the PM Clipless is the opposite. It’s teardrop form allows for a wide tip and narrow base, meaning the curls at the top hold better (which is great, because that’s where you want the lift!) and the curls at the bottom fall into a more natural wave. The Clipless came out about 6 months ago, and we can barely keep it in stock! Everyone is wild over this new iron.

Hai Nu Stik 1″ Flat Iron
Tried and true, Hai makes the best flat irons around. Beauty Company carries two sizes, the Convertable (1.5″) and the Nu Stik (1″). The Nu Stik is the most popular size, and we use one in our Salon. Nearly each of our many employees, both past and present, cannot live without their Hai flat irons. Not only is this high-quaility tool durable (the Salon Nu Stik gets constant use) but it also gets hot quickly (400 degrees!). It’s gentle plates glide easily over all hair types, and will never snag or pull at your hair. This is quite simply our staple flat iron, and we would all be lost without it!

Beauty Company keeps both a Hai Nu Stik and a Paul Mitchell Clipless Wand in the backbar of our Salon. All electrical purchases are final sale, but if you’d like to try one of these tools before purchasing it, just ask our front desk. We’re happy to plug them in so you can fall in love yourself! Long live beautiful hair!

DevaCurl Haircut

May 01, 2012

Are you a curly-haired guy or gal desperate for someone to truly understand your locks? Beauty Company knows that no two curls are the same, and we’re proud to have a DevaCurl specialist in-house. Our talented stylist LeeAnne (who has quite the curls herself) has been expertly trained to cut the curliest of hair. Book a DevaCut with her – this takes about 30 minutes longer than a traditional haircut, and is $60. LeeAnne will analyze your hair dry, make some snips, shampoo you with Deva’s No Poo, make additional corrections while your hair is wet, place you under the hooded dryer, and finish with your hair dry again. This is not a specific haircut, but rather a technique (curls are cut at an angle to not disrupt patters, each curl is cut individually, etc) and is designed to manage difficult curls. DevaCut makes a world of difference to someone who has never had a great curly cut before! Book your DevaCut with LeeAnne today, she can’t wait to meet you!

Choosing a round brush

Apr 23, 2012

Perfecting a blowout is tough. Need guidance? Follow one simple rule – the bigger the barrel, the straighter the hair. Seems easy, right? Read on for more expert opinions.

Boar bristle is well-known for a reason. It’s soft texture is gentle on hair and won’t tug locks. It also helps natural oils distribute evenly from scalp to ends.

Nylon bristle wick water quickly and produce a rapid blowout. Choose a ceramic center (heats up quickly) for the ultimate time saver.

Try combination boar and nylon for the perfect brush. The gentle effect is easy on locks while the nylon encourages hair to dry quickly.

Size matters. Use a small barrel round brush to give soft wavy curl. Use large barrels to smooth long or unruly hair into sleek locks. Repeat after me, The bigger the barrel, the straighter the hair!

Anxious to try your own? Beauty Company has a fabulous selection of round brushes. Our stand out favorites are Spornette (absolutely something for everyone!), Monroe (nice and descriptive on each label, you simply can’t pick the wrong one) and di Prima (European-style boar bristle). Ask our expert team for help choosing the perfect brush, they love to make recommendations!

Bumble.Educator

Apr 19, 2012

We are thrilled to be having Bumble&Bumble Northeast educator Corinna coming to Beauty Company in early May to teach a design (cutting) class for our stylists! Corinna is immensely talented and her bubbly energy is infectious (in a great way)! Read an interview with Corinna (below) to learn more about the fabulous skills she’ll be teaching our team.

Corinna
Bumble.Educator

Career History
I was always a hairdresser, before I knew what I wanted to be. I used to do makeovers on my friends and take before and afters. I wouldn’t just change their hair – their makeup and clothes would change, too. I loved it. I trained at Vidal Sassoon for about a year (super intense!) I moved to another salon and became their Network Educator and discovered Bumble & Bumble’s different approach to cutting. I was hooked and decided to immerse myself in it by moving to New York to work for the company. I have grown so much and am still learning every day. Now, I am a Bumble. Educator for the Northwest and am happy to back hope representing New York City.

What is your craziest story from working backstage?
Watching Liza Minelli perform New York, New York on a runway. I couldn’t believe my eyes!

Where do you find your inspiration?
Walking around just people watching. I am good at it, I don’t miss a thing!

What gave you the desire to become a hairdresser?
A woman named Colette. I was referred to her by someone who had cool hair. I called to book an appointment and she didn’t have an opening for two months so I waited. She was full of life and had such great energy. She said that doing hair was play and going home was work. she traveled sometimes for three months at a time and always came back to a full book. I told her maybe I’d do hair while I go to school to do something else and she said, “No! Just do hair. Go for it!” I left her salon, called some beauty schools and started later the next week.

What is your favorite era in hairdressing and why?
The ’40s, late ’60s and late ’70s- because the hair was super sexy.

What attracted you to Bumble & Bumble?
It made sense. Also, the people were super down to earth and humble.

What is your favorite bad hair moment?
My freshman year hair. I only did the front – the back didn’t matter, apparently.

What has been the greatest moment of your career?
Teach my first Bumble.LIVE class on my own.

What aspect of hairdressing do you most enjoy?
Making someone look better and feel better.
